Chemise
These are women’s undergarments and dresses worn next to the skin to protect more expensive clothing from getting smeared with sweat and oil from the skin. Chemise is actually a French word that is a cognate or very similar to the Italian word camicia but both words simply mean shirt. Modern times saw the evolution of chemise into something more fashionable than its earlier versions. Interestingly enough too, men in earlier times also wore the chemise regularly as a protection against sweat during summer and against cold during winter. In those times, it was the only piece of clothing that was washed more or less on a frequent basis, the rest of the outer garments being worn again and again without the benefit of washing.

The chemise for men survives today as the modern T-shirt while the one for women has evolved further and became the brassiere, the panty, the girdle and full slip. It is quite interesting how clothing changes over time and something originally intended for lowly citizens such as labourers has become something very fashionable. The chemise for men is still used as smock in some armies of the world such as those of Belgium and U.K. in the form of military combat jackets for its foot soldiers. The chemise as worn by today’s modern woman is actually more sexually provocative since the design and material used greatly resembles the other lingerie such as baby dolls and nightgowns. The chemise is greatly used for seductive purposes since it is just a one-piece undergarment for women and the fact that it is a straight-hanging loose dress makes things easier for both sexes.
